There are quite a few different variations of poker online so before venturing to play against other players it would be best to learn the basic rules of each game. For the most part, the ranking of hands in regular poker is the same ranking that you will find in online poker. There are some games that offer more than five cards to a player, but even those games you must take the best five card hand out of the seven cards provided.

The best hand that can ever be dealt in any variation of online poker is the royal straight flush. This hand comprises the 10, J, Q, K, and A all of the same suit. The odds of ever seeing this hand depends on which version of poker you might be playing, but it is very rare to get better odds than 1 in 3000. If you are one of the outrageously lucky people to hold this hand then make sure you build up the pot because no one at the table will be beating you. However, if you manage to get this hand you might want to be cautious during thunderstorms since the odds of getting hit by lightning are far better than managing this hand.

The next slightly less rare hand is the straight flush. This hand consists of five consecutive cards all of the same suit. This hand is near to unbeatable so you would have no reason to fear losing. If you did ever lose to a higher straight flush then I would suggest seeing the movie Honeymoon in Vegas. It does happen, but only in the movies.

After the straight flush is the four of a kind. This is also a rare hand, but one you should see every now and then. If you are holding a four of a kind then you will most likely be taking the pot at the end of the hand.

The next highest ranked hand in online poker is the full house. This hand consists of one set of a three of a kind and one pair of another number. This hand is also lovingly known as the boat. When two boats meet the better hand is judged by the three of a kind within the full house. Therefore a hand of 6, 6, 6, 2, and 2 will beat a hand consisting of 5, 5, 5, A, and A.

After the full house is the flush hand which consists of five cards all of the same suit. This hand is followed up by the straight, a hand with five consecutive cards. After the straight is a three of a kind followed by a two pair. A two pair is ranked by the higher pair so an A, A, 2, 2, and 3 will beat a K, K, Q, Q, and 3.

The lowest hand in online poker is the simple high card. This is a hand that does not qualify for any of the hands mentioned above and is ranked simply by the highest card in the hand. This type of hand is sometimes referred to as a bluff if anyone where to try raising with it.

No matter which form of online poker you choose to play, the above rankings will almost always be applicable. It is advisable not to attempt playing for real money if you are not first familiar with this information. It would be a waste to enter a poker game and not realize you were holding a royal straight flush!
