How Much Money Do I Need To Start Playing Texas Hold'em

It is of much debate as to how much money one should have before they enter a texas hold’em room. On the one hand you do not want to frighten off any other players with a large chip stack, something that might also cause you to be reckless with your bets. However if you go in with too little money then you will not be able to play properly. The question of how much you need before you start playing texas hold’em is therefore a very applicable question.

For the most part, when playing in a limit texas hold’em room it is best to have at least twenty times the big blind at the table. For instance, if you are playing at a $2 table then you should start with at least $40. Any less would be insufficient funds to make a decent play at the table. This amount is still not in any sense extravagant, so it would be wise to play a little tight handed until you manage to add on some winnings to this sum.

At a no-limit table there are more considerations to think about. Having twenty times the big blind is not as sufficient an amount as it would be on a limit table. Although it is possible to try and make a move with such a short chip stack, you must remember that it is very likely that anyone at the table could bet you out on any given hand. It might be a decent strategy to go in with a small stack and look for an opportunity to double up against someone else. This would then provide you with a decent sum with which to start playing smart poker. Otherwise you should not enter a texas hold’em no-limit table with less than fifty times the small blind. In other words, if you enter a texas hold’em no-limit table with a $2 big blind then you should start with a chip stack of at least $100.

Obviously these are just suggested amounts to start playing texas hold’em with and cannot guarantee any winnings. However if you start with less than these recommended amounts then your chances of coming out on top decrease tremendously. When playing texas hold’em, whether limit or no-limit, you should make sure you start with enough money to make something happen.
